TWO NEW NAMES IN THE GENUS GARCINIA L.

ABSTRACT

Garcinia solomonensis (A.C. Smith) Kosterm. and G. volkensii
(Ltbch.) Kosterm. are not valid. Hence the new names Garcinia crassi-

folia Seetharam and G. quadrilocularis Seetharam are proposed.

Garcinia solomonensis (A.C. Smith) Kosterm. dan G. volkensii
(Ltbch.) Kosterm. tidak sah. Karenanya dua nama baru Garcinia cras-
sifolia Seetharam dan G. quadrilocularis Seetharam diusulkan untuk
menggantinya.

Vesque (1893) and recently Kostermans (1976) have favoured the
merger of Pentaphalangium into Garcinia. The two nomenclatural
combinations, Garcinia solomonensis (A.C. Smith) Kosterm. and G.
volkensii (Ltbch.) Kosterm., proposed by Kostermans (1976) for Penta-
phalangium solomonensis A.C. Smith and P. volkensii Ltbch., are later
homonyms. Therefore the following two new names are proposed.

Garcinia crassifolia Seetharam, nom. nov.

Type: Brass 3484, Jan. 16, 1933 (A).

The specific epithet refers to the thick leaf texture.

Type: Volkens 457, Febr. 17, 1900. Dr. B. Zepernick from Berlin has kindly
informed us that the type specimen of Pentaphalangium volkensii is not available
in Berlin herbarium and it is probably destroyed by the air raid of March 1943.

The specific epithet refers to the quadrilocular ovary.
