KOSTERMANS Herbarium Bogoriense, Bogor, Indonesia ABSTRACT Heritiera magnifica Kosterm. and Scaphium velutinosum Kosterm. are described as new species based on specimens collected in Sumatra and Borneo respectively. ABSTRAK Heritiera magnifica Kosterm. dan Scaphium velutinosum Kosterm. dipertelakan sebagai jenis baru berdasarkan spesimen yang berturut-turut dikumpulkan di Sumatra dan Borneo. Heritiera magnifica Kosterm., spec. nov. Arbor magna, ramulis erassis, foliis ad adicem ramulorum congestis, digitatis 5-7-fofiolatis coriaceis late ellipticis, supra glabra nervo mediano gracilibus prominulis, costis et venis secundariis subimpressis, subtus laxe minutissime stellato-pilosis, nervo mediano crasso prominentibus costis erecto- patentibus arcuatis, petiolulis distinctis supra convolutis, petiolis longissimis minutissime stellato pilosis, paniculis axillaribus aggregatis, dense minutissime stellato pilosis, calyx urceolatis utrinque dense minutissime rufo stellato pilosis, flores foemineis androgynophoris brevissimis, ovariis conglutinatis apice curvatis, basi antheris sterilibus. TYPUS : S 27752 (BO), Sarawak. Tree, 37 m tall, diameter 2 m. Buttresses to 2 m high. Branchlets stout, 12-15 mm diameter, glabrous, minutely pustular. Leaves spirally arranged, crowded at the end of the branchlets, digitate, folioles 5 or 7, broadly elliptic, coriaceous, the central one larger than the other ones, 5 x 10 — 10 x lb — 11 x 20 cm, very shortly apiculate (the tip bent down), base contracted cuneately; upper surface glabrous, glossy, smooth, microscopically super- ficially pitted; midrib slender, prominulous, nerves and secondary nerves filiform, prominulous in a groove; lower surface sparsely stellate pilose, the rays filaments straight, thin, long, few; midrib stout, prominent, nerves slender, prominent, erect-patent, arcuate, ca 11 pairs, at the margin arcuately ascendent. Petiolulus 1.5 — 2 cm, pubescent, upper surface folded leaving a narrow slit; petioles densely minutely stellate pubescent, 15-24 cm long. Panicles crowded axillary and extra-axillary, many flowered, brownish red 477 478 REINWARDTIA (VOL. 10 (fresh), 5-15 cm long, densely, shortly stellate hairy, branches short filiform. Flower (female) urceolate, densely minutely stellate pubescent out and inside, ca 3 mm high and broad with 5 broadly deltoid, acute erect, 1 mm long lobes. Androgynophore very short, bearing the 5 conglutinate, laterally flatt- ened ovaries with hook-like bent apices, the base surrounded by clumps of reduced anthers (in pairs). DISTRIBUTION : Only known from the type locality, wet, evergreen, lowland tropical forest. Superficially somewhat like Heritiera sumatrana, but the leaves much larger and thicker, the flowers different. At this stage the shape of the sanaras is not predictable. BORNEO. Sarawak, outside Niah Forest Reserve, 4 th Division, Febr., fl. (female), S 27752 (BO,holo,K,L,SING). Scaphium velutinosum Kosterm., spec. nov. Arbor vasta, foliis chartaceis suborbiculato-ellipticis obscure breve acu- minatis basi subpeltatis, supra glabra nerviis sat obscuris subtus dense minut- issime stellato-pilosis, nerviis basalibus palmatis nerviis secundariis parallelis prominulis, fructus membranaceis scaphiformis longitudinaliter distincte ven- osis utrinque minutissime sat laxe stellato, pilosis.— TYPUS : Whitmore & Sidiyasa T.C.W. 3250 (BO). Tree 40 m; crown small, thin. Bole fluted to 2 m, ringed- Bark grey- green, smooth, coarsely granular; wood pale yellow, soft (very curious). Leaves chartaceous, suborbicular-elliptic, 12-13 x 15-16 cm, obscurely shortly acuminate, base slightly peltate; above dull, midrib and nerves thin promin- ulous, secondary nerves rather obscure; below densely, minutely stellate pubescent (long, thin rays arms), midrib prominent, the 5 palmate basal nerves prominent, above these 5-7 pairs of sub-opposite (the lower ones) erect-patent straight prominent nerves, connected by parallel widely spaced secondary veins. Fruit membranous, boat shaped with strong longitudinal nerves, out-and inside minutely, rather laxly (except the curved base of the fruit outside) stellate pubescent. DISTRIBUTION : Only known from the type locality, N. Sumatra, low land tropical rain forest. I have hesitated to describe this species as only a couple of fallen leaves and empty fruit are available. The description of tree, bark and wood, the stellate pilosity of the leaves make it sure, that the parts belong together. N. SUMATRA. Gunung Leuseur National Park, lowland rainforest, steep ridge, Aug., fr., T.C. Whitmore & K. Sidiyasa T.C.W. 3250 (BO). 10(5) 477_Page_1 477_Page_2 Binder cover-100_Page_015
