Reinwardtia 12(3): 257–259. –– A new species of Ischaemum veldkampii Lasut sp. nov. is described. Keywords: Ischaemum veldkampii, Gramineae, Sulawesi. ABSTRAK LASUT, MARTHEN T. 2006. Satu jenis baru Ischaemum dari Sulawesi. Reinwardtia 12(3): 257–259. –– Telah dipertelakan satu jenis baru Ischaemum veldkampii Lasut sp. nov. Kata kunci: Ischaemum veldkampii, Gramineae, Sulawesi. INTRODUCTION During field trips in the Lompobatang mountains of South Sulawesi, a species of Ischaemum was collected by the author. This colection is very similar to I. celebicum Jansen, which has been found in the same area, but differs by its slender habit, triangular shape of the ligule, pedicelled spikelet not mucronate, and lower glume not winged at all. Ischaemum veldkampii Lasut, sp. nov. – Fig. 1. Ab omnibus congeneribus malesianis habitu perenni, culmis gracilibus erectis circa 0.9 m altis, nodis glabris, laminis angustis, racemis 2, spiculis lanceolatis c. 7 mm longis (incl. callo), racemi articulis satis gracilibus apice albe barbato, poris plus minusve linearibus, spicularum sessilium glumis inferioribus glabris nitidis viridescentibus ad lutescentibus laevibus sine rugis vel nodulis, parte basali convexa induratis, parte superiore planis distincte nervatis distaliter sine auriculis differt. – Type: Lasut 994 (L, holo; BO), S. Celebes, Mt. Lompobatang, 26 June 2005. Perennials. Culms tufted, erect, c. 0.9 m tall. Nodes glabrous. Sheaths moderately pilose. Ligules triangular, c. 4 mm high, membranous, with bulbous-based hairs on both sides. Blades linear, c. 25 cm by 6 mm, gradually narrowed into the base, pseudo-petiole absent. Inflorescence base still included in the sheath when mature (see note). Racemes 2, slender, c. 4.5 cm long. Joints longer than pedicel, rather slender, c. 5.5 mm long, about as long as the spikelet, edges white pilose on three sides, hairs c. 2 mm long, apex with a pilose rim. Pore elongated with parallel margins. Sessile spikelets c. 7 mm long (incl. callus), callus at base with a pilose ring, body glabrous. Lower glume smooth, indurated in the lower part, greenish to yellowish, keels narrowly inflexed over their entire lengths, apex not auricled, dorsally more or less flat to convex, smooth all over, nerves c. 21, reticulate at least in the upper part. Upper glume with a mucro c. 1 mm long; keel slightly serrulate, gradually curved (no hump). Awns geniculate, long-exserted, c. 13 mm long (i.s.), with a twisted column. Pedicelled spikelets 2-flowered, male, c. 5.5 mm long, muticous. Lower glume keels scaberulous, nerves reticulate c. 12 at least in the upper part, apex muticous. DISTRIBUTION. Only known from the type collection. HABITAT. Banks of small river in fired, secondary forest, c. 1790 m alt. 257 258 REINWARDTIA [VOL.12 Fig. 1. Ischaemum veldkampii Lasut. Lower left: pair of spikelets. Centre: habit. Lower right: part of culm, sheath, ligule, and blade. Middle right: sessile spikelet and opened sessile spikelet with twisted awn. Upper right: pedicel spikelet and opened pedicel spikelet. (Based on Lasut 994 BO). 2006] LASUT: A new species of grass from Sulawesi 259 NOTES. Most similar to I. celebicum Jansen, which has been found in the same area, but the present taxon seems to differ by its slender habit, triangular shape of the ligule, the very narrow leaf blades, the more slender joints and pedicels, the joints longer than the pedicels, the upper and the lower glume of both the sessile and the pedicelled spikelets reticulate nerved, with c. 21 against 7 nerves in the upper part of the lower glume and c. 11 against 3 in the upper part of the upper glume of the sessile spikelet, pedicelled spikelet not mucronate, lower glume not winged at all. Flowering inflorescences in the holotype specimen were still partly sheathed by the flag leaf. Possibly, at a more mature stage they will become fully exerted as is usual in Ischaemum. ETYMOLOGY. Named for Dr. J. F. Veldkamp, National Herbarium of The Netherlands, Leiden branch. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS. I would like to express many thanks to all of my supervisors: Dr. Sri S. Tjitrosoedirdjo, Prof. Dr. Mien A. Rifai, Prof. Dr. Edi Guhardja, and Dr. Jan-Frits Veldkamp. I wish to thank the Masarang Foundation Tomohon for financing my field trip to Sulawesi. INSTRUCTION TO AUTHORS Taxonomic keys should be prepared using the aligned-couplet type. Manuscripts intended for publication in Reinwardtia should be written either in English, French or German, and represent articles which have not been published in any other journal or proceedings. Each manuscript received will be considered and processed further if it is accompanied by signed statements given independently by two reviewers chosen by the author(s) attesting to its merits as well as its scientific suitability for publication in Reinwardtia. Two printed copies (on A4 paper) of the manuscript of not more than 200 pages should be sent to Editors, together with an electronic copy prepared on Word Processor computer programme using Times New Romance letter type and saved as Rich Text File must be submitted. For the style of presentation authors should follow the latest issue of Reinwardtia very closely. Title of the article should be followed by author's name and mailing address and a one-paragraphed abstract in English (with French or German abstract for papers in French or German) of not more than 250 words. Keywords should be given below each abstract. On a separate paper author(s) should prepare the preferred running title of the article submitted. Strict adherence to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature is observed, so that taxonomic and nomenclatural novelties should be clearly shown, Latin description for new taxon proposed should be provided, and the herbaria where type specimens are deposited should be indicated. Synonyms should be presented in the long form [name of taxon, author's name, year of publication, abbreviated journal or book title, volume (number): [page]. Maps, line drawing illustrations or photographs preferably should be prepared in landscape presentation to occupy two columns. Illustrations must be submitted as original art accompanying, but separate from, the manuscripts. On electronic copy, the illustrations should be saved in .jpg or .gif format. Legends for illustrations must be submitted separately at the end of the manuscript. Bibliography, list of literature cited or references follow the Harvard System. For each paper published author(s) will receive 25 copies of reprints free of charge. Any additional copies should be ordered in advance and the author(s) will be charged accordingly.
