2editor's note.pmd 1 FROM THE EDITOR In this issue, we are featuring four articles from different branches of the sciences. From the f ield of Environmental Science, we have an ar ticle on cetacean watching in the Southern Tañon Strait Protected Seascape and how the participatory process has guided the environmental management efforts of the various stakeholders in the cetacean watching industry. The second article is a contribution from Mathematics and focuses on a method in solving certain non-linear singular partial differential equations. The third a r t i c l e , f r o m C h e m i s t r y, d e m o n s t r a t e s t h e u s e f u l n e s s o f t h e i o n chromatographic method in the determination of monochloroacetic acid in swimming pool waters. Finally, from Biology, we have the ar ticle on accessioned specimens in the Jose Vera Santos Memorial Herbarium, which is located at the Institute of Biology in UP Diliman. We a r e a l s o fe a t u r i n g o n e Co m m u n i c a t i o n s p a p e r a n a l y z i n g t h e characteristics of typhoon Yolanda (International Name: Haiyan) vis-à-vis data on the characteristics of other tropical cyclones archived in the IBTRACS database, to indicate the importance of Science in disaster mitigation. Finally, we are adding a compilation of the abstracts of the patents, trademarks, industrial designs, and other intellectual property registrations awarded to UP Diliman inventors, researchers, and creative workers. It is envisioned that these information will encourage the UP community to f ile more patents and other means of intellectual property protection. In this regard, the Off ice of the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development is on hand to assist UP Diliman constituents. We wish for 2014 to be a more productive year for everyone.
