The seed was planted and took root. The fruit will bo both plentiful 

and sound, we hope, and perhaps the first bud is noted in the form of the 
first S.A.L.S. Journal. 

The development of Logopedics in South Africa is ably traced 
in the Presidential Address, and wo now havo a group of workers united in 
enthusiasm, scientific interest, and the desire to progress sincoroly in· tho 
theory'and practice of speech therapy. 

In that a large part of our approach to the individual is an attempt 
to understand the influence of cultural forces on his particular personality, 
we can envisage with satisfaction a future in which there will be not only 
a body for co-ordinating the activities of speech therapists in South Africa 
and elsewhere, but there will be a body which will co-ordinate the activities 
of various workers in differing,but related fields, to the benefit of the 
deviate individual. When the speech defective person can be treated syn-
optically, with thorough investigation and broadth of understanding, our 
efforts to achieve health and adjustment will bG enriched. 

We hope that this journal will -aid in expressing the views and knowledge 
of our members, that it may be a common forum for a critical and unbiased 
approach to speech problems: that we will not only bo able to indicate new 
paths for research, but retest, discard or confirm old theories and prac-
tices, so often accepted as fact, though their baSGs are merely assumptions. 

Each member is invited to submit all corroborations, disagreementŝ  or 
discussions an any published article, and it is hoped that lively and pro-
vocative stimulation will be forthcoming. 

The bud is small but it is opening. Give it the "warmth of your critical 
thought and it will bear rich fruit.
