Connective tissue massage o r Bindegewebsmassage as it is know n in G erm any where th e technique originated, m ust not be com pared w ith the m ore conventional form s o f massage. I t is a specialized technique now widely employed in Germany and o th er E uropean countries and is gaining wide interest in B ritain and elsewhere. I t is used in p a th o logical conditions associated w ith visceral disease and in the treatm ent o f diseases associated w ith pathology o f circula tion. Present-day knowledge seems to m ake it impossible to explain th e results on a purely neurological reflex basis, but the A uthor claims gratifying results from h er own clinical experience. This book follows the teachings o f Elisabeth D icke, the originator o f the m ethod and o f D r. Leube, her friend and collaborator. T he A u th o r has incorporated the ideas o f both to m ake this an inform ative an d comprehensive study of a most interesting technique. The first p art o f th e b ook deals w ith the anatom y and function o f connective tissue, circulation and vascular innervation, all clearly and simply described and illustrated. The main p art o f the b ook contains a well-illustrated and detailed description o f the actual technique o f connective tissue massage, followed by chapters on th e effects o f this technique and the therapeutic application together with case histories. Here is another technique to add to o u r arm am entarium but like so m any it is im possible to learn from the b ook alone and practical training is necessary. T he a u th o r states that this boo k has been w ritten to help im part knowledge, gained in past years o f study and experience so as to help | others build on a sound basis and gain further insight into the subject. It is indeed a reference b ook o f great value and to those who are being introduced to this subject for the first time, it is a most enlightening book. C LA Y TO N ’S E LE C T R O T H E R A PY AND ACTTNOTHERAPY Fourth Edition by P. M . Scott Published by Bailliere Tindall and Cox Ltd. This “ New L ook” version o f an old favourite is a very welcome and refreshing change. The general layout and material has been reorientated and on the whole the chapters are in better sequence and clearer in detail. I t is a relief to note the absence o f m any o f the irrelevant museum pieces. The inclusion o f more accurate physics and a final chapter on U ltra Sonico T herapy which hitherto has not been m entioned are o f particular im portance. Students will find their way around this book far more easily than they have through p ast editions.
