P ro fe sso r D a r t is k n o w n as the discoverer o f the fa m o u s T a u n g s Skull in 1924. P ro fe sso r D a r t has e a rn e d w orld re n o w n n o t o nly in the field o f A n th ro p o lo g y , b u t a lso in the fields o f M edical Science a n d E d u c a tio n . F o r m an y years he w as P ro fe ss o r o f A n a to m y a t the M edical S chool o f the W itw a te rsra n d U niversity. From 1925-1943 he was also D e a n o f the F a c u lty of M edicine o f the M edical School. A s a m em b e r o f the M edical C o u n c il, N u rs in g C o u n c il, a n d the S o u th A fric a n In s titu te fo r M edical R e se arc h , P ro fe sso r D a rt h as re n d ere d extensive service to the S outh A frican w o rld o f re sea rc h a n d c u ltu re. N u m e ro u s degrees a n d d istin c tio n s have been c o n ferre d on P ro fe sso r D a rt, only o ne o f w hich I wish to m en tio n at the m o m e n t, th a t is the G o ld M edal o f th e S o u th A frican A s so c ia tio n fo r the A d v a n c e m e n t o f Science. P ro fe sso r D a r t has influenced m any y o u n g S o u th A frica n s to e n te r the field o f M e dical R e se arc h a n d his stu d e n ts , not only in S o u th A frica , b u t elsew here, d o him c red it.
