This book deals primarily with the surgical procedure and suitable conditions for Plastic Surgery, em phasizing the necessity for teamwork and outlining the physiotherapy principles and uses in this field. It is a surgical technique that has made tremendous progress in developm ent during and after World War II, and therefore com paritively new to physiotherapy. Mr. Reidy has conveyed the importance o f function rather than just m ovem ent which at once will appeal to the physiotherapist as being a positive approach. Another point clearly indicated is the necessity o f adopting the technique to the individual requirements o f the patient which calls for iniative and the closest co-operation in the team. This is a b ook that every physiotherapist should read. It is to be hoped that it is the forerunner o f more detailed books in this fascinating subject. J.B. “ Suspension Therapy in Rehabilitation” By M. H ollis, M .C .S.P and M. H. S. Roper, M .C.S.P. The co-authors o f this b ook are to be congratulated for a very comprehensive organisation o f a very difficult subject. Suspension Therapy lends itself to so much m odification and adaptation to individual requirements o f patients, that it can be as well abused as used. It is therefore a pleasure to see that a great deal o f the first part o f the b ook is devoted to physics and basic prin ciples. It is only a pity that we have not yet devised a termin ology for this therapy that could simplify the positioning o f slings, ropes and pulleys in relation to the m ovements and patients’ position. The second part o f the book contains excellent articles on the treatment o f specialised conditions that readily lend them selves to Suspension Therapy. This book has been long needed and Physiotherapists will find it o f great value and with the m any illustrations and photographs it is a pleasure to read. We may not all have the sam e ideas on som e o f the techniques described, but that is the proof o f the adaptability and usefulness o f this form o f treatment. J.B. “ Clayton’s Electrotherapy and Actinotherapy” B y P. M. Scott, M .C.S.P., T.E.T., T .M .M .G . This revised third edition is a very good text book for Physiotherapy Students. It is a pleasure to see that the treatment section o f the first and second Edition has been omitted and that for the first tim e the techniques o f the various sections in Electrotherapy and A ctinotherapy are described. The book is divided into three parts. P art I E lectrotherapy— Direct and L ow Frequency currents Miss Scott has cut dow n as much as possible on old types o f production, m odification and principles. Instead, she has stressed principles involved in the construction o f Electronic Apparatus which is o f more value. The chapter on nerve and m uscle stim ulation and Electrical Reactions differ in som e points to our findings particularly in relation to the evaluation o f accom m odation. P art II— Miss Scott is to be congratulated on the in clusion o f the chapter “Interference with R ad io R eception .” This gives a description o f controlling devices such as quartz crystals and co-axial line oscillators. C o n tin u ed fr o m page 1 5 On the whole, it is a very valuable section for students particularly in relation to effects, principles o f production and techniques. I f anything, the L ong W ave Diathermy part is rather overstressed. Part 1IT—Actinotherapy. This deals with production, effects and techniques o f Infra Red radiation, Radiant heat and Ultra Violet R adiation. There is a great improvement on the construction o f the Electronic D ischarge lamps as compared with the previous editions. And new for us are the Fluorescent tubes for general ultra-violet irradiation which seem to be a great success. Our old friend the Carbon Arc Lamp still seems to be favoured. F .M .H .H .
