A t th e first m eeting M rs. Levy was elected chairm an, M rs. M. B eattie vice-chairm an and M rs. A. M athias as th e th ird p h y sio th erap ist m em ber o f the Executive C om m ittee. T h e advice o f th e SA Society o f P hysiotherapy has been sought by the B oard on a v ariety of issues, w hilst the Society has ap proach the B oard on several issues, [n all instances the advice o f th e relevant Special Interest G roups has been sought. T h e follow ing are som e of the issues: 1. T h e content o f in tro d u cto ry circulars distrib u ted by physiotherapists when setting up p riv ate practice. It a has since been decided th a t once exam ples have been f) sent in by the Branches, the m atter w ill be finalised a t C ouncil in A p ril 1979. 2. A n acceptable schedule o f fees fo r physiotherapists fo r p rivate patients and M .V .A . cases. G azetted fees plus 33y% is the recognised fee fo r these. 3. Suggested guidelines fo r the use o f inspectors appointed by th e B oard w ho visit train in g centres to assess the standard o f training. T his question is in th e hands o f the L ecturers G ro u p fo r fu rth er discussion. 4. C rite ria fo r th e registration o f ad d itio n al qualifica­ tions o f physiotherapists. A pproaches m ade by the Society to the B oard in ­ clude:— 1. T h at the scope o f o u r profession be am ended to include the term s “ rem edial gym nastics” and “ re­ creational th e ra p y ” . 2. T h a t tem p o rary reg istratio n fo r visiting lecturers b e considered. T h is m atter h as been discussed and agreed upon, b u t final perm ission m ust be obtained from th e M in ister of H ealth by the P rofessional B oard. Registration Sub-Committee A C om m ittee has been form ed consisting o f the follow ing m em bers: M rs. J. B eenhakker, M iss F . de ^B ruin, M rs. F . G lau b er and M rs. A. M cF arlane. T his Committee will deal m ainly w ith th e applications fo r registration from foreign train ed physiotherapists w an t­ ing to w ork in South A frica. Registration Fees S.A.M .D.C. registration fees fo r the Professional B oard fo r P hysiotherapy have been increased to R15,00 from 1 O ctober 1978 and m em bers are urged to be p ro m p t in paying as otherw ise they w ill be practising illegally if resident in a prescribed area. National Executive Committee D u rin g th e m onths A pril to O ctober 1978 the N .E.C. met six times. D uring, this tim e M rs. Levy, C hairm an, and o th e r m em bers o f th e C om m ittee w ere overseas attending th e W .C .P.T. C ongress ,in Israel. F IN A N C E G roup Insurance Ind em nity Policy. T h e prem ium will be increased to R8,00 as from 1 Ja n u a ry 1979 fo r all practising m em bers. M ost B ranches have already col­ lected R5,00 tow ards next year so a fu rth e r am ount o f R2,50 w ill have to b e collected fro m each m em ber. T he Insurance B rokers have m ade extensive investiga­ tions into the possibility of o b tain in g sim ilar cover at a lesser p rem ium but it has been established th at this is not an u nreasonable increase in view o f the benefits offered. In d iv id u al insurance fo r m em bers w ould be ex o rb itan t, and w ith o u t insurance cover m em bers are run n in g very serious risks w hich could cripple them financially for life. Paid Secretary. T h e T reasurer is investigating the p ossibility o f th e Society em ploying a professional p art-tim e paid G en eral Secretary. Increase in Membership o f the SA Society of Physiotherapy T h e m em bership of th e Society is now in excess of 1 150 m em bers and is still growing. H ow ever there are still m any physiotherapists registered w ith the S.A.M .D.C. who are n o t m em bers o f the SA Society of P hysiotherapy. E v ery effort m ust be m ade to en­ courage these practising persons to join th e Society and thus strengthen o u r ranks. 13th National Council Meeting T his will be held in C ape T ow n from 23 - 27 A pril 1979 w ith the actual C ouncil M eeting on 26 and 27 A pril. T h e detailed program m e appears on the centre pages o f this issue. T h e n u m b er o f delegates to attend C ouncil and th e expense involved are u n d er discussion. Postal Votes T hose delegates req u ired to vote m ust do so only under instruction o f th e ir B ranches and n o t in th e ir personal capacity. T his m ust be m ade very clear by B ranch C hairm en w hen giving instructions to the delegates. The 5th National Committee o f Representatives T his m eeting was held in Johannesburg on 30 Septem ber 1978. A full day of deliberations took place w ith a very representative gathering, delegates fro m all B ranches o f the Society and Special In terest G ro u p s being present. T h e follow ing w ere read o r tabled, and discussed: 1. A m endm ents to th e C onstitution. 2. R ep o rts fro m the N .E.C . and T reasurer. 3. R e p o rt from the delegates, E. M. B otting, P. B eenhakker o f W itw atersrand U niversity, was held on 14 S eptem ber 1978. T h e w orkshop started w ith a fo rm ativ e pre-test on evaluation, follow ed by a short talk on the p urpose o f evaluation. P articip an ts then divided into sm all groups to w ork o u t m easuring instrum ents to test w hether: 1. On com pletion of train in g th e physiotherapy student w ill understand the personal attitu d es re ­ q u ired fo r p h ysiotherapy and will practise acco rd ­ ing to the ethics o f her profession. o r 2. On com pletion o f train in g the physiotherapy student w ill be able to w ork effectively in a m u lti­ d iscip lin ary team , b o th in health care an d re­ search. T h is was follow ed by a p len ary session in w hich the groups presented th e ir w ork fo r discussion. In the a ftern o o n groups w orked tow ards: 1. F in d in g an effective m ethod o f assessing students in th e clinical situation. or 2. F in d in g an effective m ethod o f evaluating students in the final practical exam inations. A gain this w as follow ed by a plenary session. T h e m ost interesting suggestions w ere m ade by groups study­ ing th e fo rm er problem , w here th e suggestion w as m ade th at the present clinical exam ination be supplem ented by b o th peer an d staff au d it o f the stan d ard o f health care delivered by the student, on the basis o f au d it o f a problem -oriented record system, and also b e an internal clinical exam ination du rin g the last week of each clinical block on w hich the student w orks. T he staff o f the U niversity o f the W itw atersrand then presented som e ideas on the setting o f papers, including a shredding session. T he w orkshop was attended by clinical supervisors as well as teaching personnel and discussions w ere stim ulating and thought- provoking. A general m eeting o f the L ectu rers’ G ro u p was held on 15th Septem ber 1978. M atters discussed included the registration o f ad d itio n al qualifications, guidelines fo r m inim al standards fo r degree courses, ways and m eans o f specialisation w ithin the profession an d a re p o rt on the a c tiv itie s ' of th e Interest G ro u p fo r R esearch in P h y sio th erap y ,-w h ich has been form ed in the T ra n sv ia l. It was unanim ously agreed th at the need existed fo r a research interest g ro u p a t a n atio n al level and the L ecturers’ G ro u p w ould like to congratulate an d su p p o rt the in itiativ e o f th e group form ed at the U n iv ersity o f th e W itw atersrand. ■. T h e next m eeting o f th e G ro u p will be on M onday 23 A p ril 1979 in C ape Town. O n T uesday 24 A p ril the G ro u p w ill com bine w ith th e N a tio n a l H o sp ital G ro u p in a w orkshop on clinical supervision in w hich students, hospital staff and teaching staff will present th eir views. C happell o f the D ep artm en t of P a e d ia ­ tric Surgery on the causes of resp irato ry distress in the child as com pared w ith th e adult. T his was a very in te r­ esting lecture w hich m ade it clear th a t a child is n o t a m in iatu re adult. T h e lecture on the 21st A ugust was given by Prof. M. R . Funston, the new Prof. o f D iagnostic R adiology and C hief D iagnostic R adiologist at the Johannesburg H o sp ital, on the reading o f Spinal X -Rays. T his was a subject o f great interest to physiotherapists. E arly in S eptem ber an open lecture by D r. A. L. Becker, a psychiatrist, was arran g ed to take place at the Senate H ouse o f th e U n iv ersity of th e W itw aters- rand. T h e subject was “W hy we a re the w ay we are — lets ta lk ab o u t Sex”. T h is en tertaining lecture was follow ed by p o rt an d coffee an d cake. T h e no rm al lecture fo r Septem ber w as follow ed by the A nnual G eneral M eeting. T h e L ecturer was Prof. van H asselt, H o n o ra ry P resident of th e Southern T ran sv aal B ranch fo r th e past year. H is subject was “W hat the P h y sio th erap ist Should K now A b o u t D ru g s”. T his proved to be a very helpful lecture an d the large atten d an ce show ed th a t physiotherapists are very interested in the correct use o f drugs. T h e o ther speakers included physiotherapists an d occupational therapists who are experts in th e ir fields and several pro m in en t doctors an d professors. T h e course was very w orthw hile an d provided a w ealth o f in fo rm atio n and an o p p o rtu n ity fo r discussion.
