T o h er husband B erry and to her children our deepest sym pathy is extended. She graduated with a B.Sc. in Physiotherapy from th e U niversity of th e W itw atersrand in 1950. She gained varied experience in hospitals in Johannesburg, E ngland and Z am bia. Shortly after coming to th e Cape with h e r fam ily she enrolled at the U niversity o f Cape T ow n to study fo r her T eacher’s C ertificate in Physiotherapy. She gained this qualification in 1967 and taught at th e U .C.T. School of Physiotherapy fo r some years. In 1971 she took a y ear’s sabbatical leave to study A natom y II. Following her appointm ent to a lectureship in A natom y at U .C .T . M edical School in 1972, she tran sferred fro m the physiotherapy to the anatom y departm ent. She lectured to the param edical services and subsequently to the medical students. She continued w ith her studies and in 1975 achieved a first class pass in h e r B.Sc. Med. H onours degree w ith A natom y as a m ajor. She was involved w ith research in th e em bryological field and had a num ber o f publications to her credit. She was an excellent teacher and will be rem em bered by h e r m any students fo r her e n ­ thusiastic tuition and h e r willingness to help and advise them . N o t only was she an outstanding academ ician but as a m other she stayed interested and involved in the activities o f her grow ing children. She also devoted the sam e w hole-hearted enthusiasm to the projects and sports in w hich she was interested. She loved th e outdoors and had a wide knowledge of n a tu ra l history. M any friends will rem em ber with affection the open-hearted sharing of h e r sea­ side hom e. She was a keen league squash player and m ountaineer. A creative person, as well, her enjoym ent of and skill a t gardening and photo­ graphy particularly, were very m uch p a rt of her. Evelyn Sm ith was a vital loving person who always had tim e and energy for others. She was a talented and dynam ic person whose presence will be greatly missed by all. OBITUARY D R . H . D . EPSTEIN 30-11-1896—7/7/1977 It is with great reg ret th a t we heard the news o f D r. H a rry E pstein’s death at the age o f 80. H e was born in W ellington and started his medical training at U .C.T. b u t com pleted his M.B. Ch.B. degree in E dinburgh. H e retu rn ed to South A frica, m arried Sadie K atzen in 1926, and started his practice in P aarl. M any o f th e colour­ ful stories he told related to this period and re ­ flected his g reat sense of h u m o u r and u n derstand­ ing of hum an n atu re. D uring the second W orld W ar, he did military service as a camp doctor at Z onderw ater. He re tu rn e d Mo civilian life and in 1948 joined D r. L evitt in a physical m edicine practice in P retoria. F o r 22 years he was actively involved in clinical w ork at the H . F. V erw oerd Hospital. Always generous and interested in physiotherapy, he donated a cup to the P reto ria P hysiotherapy College in 1964, to be awarded each year to the most popular and prom ising student. F u rth e rm o re , on his retire m en t he donated the whole of his m edical library to th e non-E uropean students of G a-R ankuw a. T h e physiotherapists who w orked fo r and with him will miss this dear old man. G a-Rankuw a First Diplom ates A t the end o f 1976 four students at G a-R ankuw a w rote their final exam inations in th e N atio n al D iplom a in Physiotherapy and all fo u r were successful in the ex­ aminations.
