30 P H Y S I O T H E R A P Y M ARCH 197g B O O K REVIEW - continued inclusion o f a discussion on degenerative arth ro sis of th e spine an d in terv erteb ral disc disease, is welcomed. W hat is sadly lacking in th is boo k is a m ention o f passive m o b ilisatio n as possible treatm en t fo r in ter v erteb ral disc lesions. S hortw ave d iath erm y is still em ployed in th e treatm en t o f rh eu m ato id a rth ritis, w hereas it is now know n th a t deep h eat is d etrim en tal to this condition. I t is h oped th a t these two points can be p u t rig h t in a fu tu re edition. T h e th ird section on p h y sio th erap y fo r children is subdivided in to th ree p arts: (1) C hild developm ent. T h e a u th o r discusses briefly the m ilestones o f developm ent as a related sequence, w hich is m ore m eaningful th an th e list given in previous editions. A n illustrated c h art o f developm ent w ould be a fu rth e r im provem ent. A n in fo rm ativ e section on th e im portance of play and the choice o f useful toys is also included. (2) Some specific conditions related to children, including con genital ab n o rm alities and re sp ira to ry conditions. (3) M ental subnorm ality, w ith suggestions fo r physical assistance. T h e final section deals w ith th e few rem aining skin diseases still referred fo r physiotherapy. Leg ulcers, burns an d sk in grafts a re fairly extensively described and w ell illu strated b u t treatm en t is n o t very specific. I q u ery the valid ity o f th e a u th o r’s statem ent: “T h e usefulness o f u ltra v io le t light on w ounds is d o ubted by m an y ”. I t is m y experience th a t if correctly applied, u ltrav io let lig h t can be invaluable. I t is a p ity th a t th e m anagem ent o f physical d is ab ility in general is excluded in this edition, although it is touched on w hen applicable in conjunction w ith v ario u s conditions. G en erally speaking, th e ap p ro ach in th is book assum es th a t th e p h y sio th erap ist is fa m ilia r w ith m ethods and techniques m entioned in treatm ent. F ro m the students’ view point, this leaves a gap. I t is hoped th at in fu tu re editions detailed technique will be in cluded to enhance the value o f this otherw ise very useful book, fo r student and physiotherapist. M. C.
