July, 1955 P H Y S I O T H E R A P Y Page Five POLIO POSTGRADUATE COURSE This most successful course was held in Johannesburg May 20th an d 21st. Seventy-nine postgraduates regis tered, the highest num ber fo r any course to date. The course ws opened by Professor U nderw ood, Dean o f T he Faculty o f M edicine at th e University o f the Witwatersrand. H e spoke very appreciatively o f physio therapists and their w ork, an d said how pleased the University was w ith the ever increasing popularity o f the Postgraduate courses. D r. H aden then gave a lecture on the K a b a t m ethod of rehabilitation o f muscles, particularly fo r polio cases. His physiotherapist, Miss Botting, helped to illustrate the lecture by a practical dem onstration. D r. H aden m ade it clear th at only by constant practice can one understand this rather complex form o f treatm ent which is so opposed to many more conservative form s o f muscle re-education. On Saturday m orning Sister Vlok, a Sister T u to r of the Johannesburg G eneral H ospital, gave a n excellent lecture on the nursing o f poliomyelitis cases. This talk was invaluable in giving a clear picture and background i o f the patient while being nursed through the acute stage. Sister Vlok’s talk was followed by a dem onstration o f the more conservative methods o f treatm ent o f polio by Mrs. M. G oodm an and M rs. G. Browne, physiotherapists from Johannesburg H ospital. They dem onstrated very clearly the best way o f approaching th e treatm ent o f polio and showed some o f the m ore com m on trick movem ents which can occur. This was an excellent dem onstration which had been carefully prepared. D r. H . M alherbe o f th e Poliomyelitis Research Foundation then talked to us about th e different types o f respirator which can be used. T he talk was illustrated by lantern slides an d proved to be a fascinating subject. D r. M alherbe’s powers o f lecturing were greatly appreciated. Jn the afternoon we were lucky enough to have D r. James G ear, o f world renown, from th e Poliomyelitis Research Foundation. H e talked to us about the develop ment o f the polio vaccine and assessed its present day value. We were very honoured to have him give such a n interesting talk. Miss Estelle A lberts, from the Physiotherapy D e p a rt ment o f the University, then gave a talk on th e Kenny method o f treatm ent which she had used at St. M ary ’s H ospital, C arshalton, in England. Miss A lberts discussed the theory o f th e treatm ent and then dem onstrated the passive movem ents given. H er lecture was clear and well presented an d she gave us the benefit o f her knowledge and the ways in which she thought th e K enny method could be used. Finally th e postgraduates had the opportunity o f talking to D r. H ad en ’s physiotherapists, as well as those from th e H ospital and University so th a t they could practise various treatm ents th at had been discussed in lectures,0 as well as exchange ideas. Once again it was proved how im portant these po st graduate courses are, as Miss Emslie said when she thanked the organisers and the University. The standard o f lectures and dem onstrations was very high, an d the co-operation o f the nursing staff, particularly o f the Fever H ospital, and o f th e doctors, could not have been bettered.
