A T R IB U T E .

M em bers o f the South A frican Society o f Physiotherapy will be shocked to  learn o f the death 
o f M rs. G uthrie Smith, who died peacefully in her sleep a t the end o f June 1956.

T o those o f us who were personally acquainted w ith her, her passing will deprive us o f much 
she had to offer even after her retirem ent, as she was always available to give advice o r to  consider 
difficulties for which her ever inventive m ind could always find a solution o r a way o f surm ounting.

M rs. G uthrie Smith achieved an international reputation not only fo r her book which has been 
translated into m any languages, but for the developm ent o f the technique o f sling suspension, now 
an integral p a rt o f any Physiotherapy syllabus. In fact during her lifetime she added a great deal 
to  the profession which will rem ain as a m onum ent to her dynamic personality and pioneering 
spirit.

Physical R ehabilitation as we know  it today and only really developed from  the second world 
war, can be attributed to such Physiotherapists as her, who with their positive attitu d e tow ards 
activity and m otivation opened the way to the scientific course it has taken and to  the developm ent 
o f team w ork previously unrecognised.

H er ideas, no t always convential, or even agreed with, her ideals always o f the highest, her 
energy alm ost superhum an were an inspiration and the profession is poorer for her passing.

In  conclusion we offer o u r deepest sym pathy to  Miss Isabelle Smith, Mrs. G u th rie’s adviser, 
com panion and friend.
