Stewart The physiotherapist's role has undergone major changes in the last decade or so. Increasingly physiotherapists are required to m anage d ep art ments, different levels of personnel and budgets. In addi tion, w ith the m ove aw ay from tertiary care to prim ary care, p h y sio th erap ists inevitably require to m anage patients intervention program m es, liaise w ith families and be m ore closely involved in inter sectorial negotia tion. The tighter financial controls of m edical aid schemes m eans that physiotherapists have to be m ore innovative in their interventions w ith patients m anaging the condi tion rather than hands on palliative treatm ent. This book effectively describes the changing a n d new roles w hich the physiotherapists now have eg. case m a nager, consultant a n d educator as well as giving tips on how to m anage change. Two of the m ost valuable chapters are the ones on time m anagem ent techniques and case load m anagem ent. Both these chapters contain useful tips on organisational skills. The book is w ritten in a clear and concise m anner, w ith examples taken from clinical situations. Each chapter is sum m arised and has a "Test your Skills" section. The major draw back is that it is geared alm ost exclu sively to the Am erican health-care m odel and all the descriptions on record keeping, insurance a n d cost con tainm ent are to help Am erican physical therapists. This therefore m akes large sections of the book not p articu larly m eaningful for the South African physiotherapist.
