OBITUARY - MISS M R WHITE by C P Rodseth Miss M argaret White, former head of the D epartm ent of Physiotherapy a t the University of C ape Town, died on 3 June 1993, a few hours after suffering a severe stroke. Miss White trained as a physiotherapist a t the Western Infirmary, Glasgow, qualifying under the old conjoint dispensation, CSMMG, ME, LET in 1939. In 1944 she joined the Physiotherapy Service and saw service in North Africa and Italy. Her interest in chest physiotherapy took her to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1953 under the C olom bo Plan to assist in establishing a Thoracic Unit a t the General Hospital in Colom bo, It was on her w ay back to the UK, 18 months later, th a t she passed through C ape Town a nd the seed of her decision to return perm anently was sown, and in 1959 Miss White was a p p o in te d to the teaching staff of the D epartm ent of Physio­ therapy, University of C ape Town under Miss MHS Roper. She soon felt the need for a formal teaching qualification so, in 1963, she w ent to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle-upon-Tyne as a student te a ch e r of physiotherapy. Miss White returned to C ape Town as a lecturer a t the beginning of 1966 and succeeded Miss Roper as Head of the D epartm ent in 1967 w hich position she held until her retirement a t the end of 1976 having been a p p o in te d to the rank of senior lecturer in 1971. After retiring she w ent to live in the seaside tow n of Hermanus. Probably the major achievem en t of her term as departm en tal head was to im plem ent the transition of the course from a three year University diplom a to a four year degree, the first full group of students graduating in 1975. M argaret White was a "la d y ' in the very best sense of the w ord a nd she will be rem em bered with affection a nd respect by all w ho knew her.
