B e e n h a k k e r discusses the relevance o f physio ­ t h e r a p y e d u c a t i o n in o u r mix ed first a n d thir d world society. T h e o t h e r articles deal with the e x a m in in g a n d testing o f students . N ow h e re is the i m p o r ta n c e o f reading emphasiz ed. In o rd e r to p u t o u r pr of ess ion on a m ore scientific basis, we need to im ple m ent m o re research. But even if this is d o n e , w h a t h a p p e n s to th e results o f the rese arch? Are the results o f published research being p ut to practical use? T h e d e v elo ped co u n tr ie s have a fair a m o u n t o f o n ­ going research which is pub lis hed regularly in the various p h y s i o t h e r a p y j o u r n a l s . D o e s j o u r n a l r e a d i n g f o r m a compulsory area of university pro g ra m m e s? “ If ed ucatio nal p r o g r a m m e s fail to em phasiz e the i m p o r ta n c e o f research, fail to p u t r e s e a r c h in p e r s p e c tiv e by p r o v i d i n g case ex am p le s t h a t d e m o n s t r a t e the utility o f research, and neglect to pr ovide a faculty wh ose m e m b e rs aspire to be e x a m p le s o f researchers a n d re se arch utilizers, they do little to e n g e n d e r a fondness for rese arch a m o n g stu dents. Unless such a fondness is foste re d, st udents ma y be in­ hib it ed f r o m b e c o m in g p ra c titio n e rs w ho feel c o m fo rta b le with research u t ilis a tio n ” 1 Very little recent w o r k is to be f o u n d in th e av erage p h y s i o t h e r a p y t e x t b o o k . All t e x t b o o k s are at least three years o ut o f d a te when newly publis hed. Even those books with exten siv e b ib li o g rap h ies m ay be o u t o f date. A r e p u ta b le j o u r n a l is the best source fo r the m ost recent work. A n d n o t only p h y sio th e ra p y jo u r n a ls . A great m any articles on rese ar ch in p h y s io th e r a p y ca n be fo u n d in various medical jo u rn a ls . A s su m in g t h a t an interest is research and re a d in g is cu lt ivate d in th e te a c h in g p r o g r a m m e s , w h a t h a p p e n s after g ra d u a tio n ? This is no way to develop an ex­ pertise. Phy sio th erap ists w orking at the large academic hospitals have the advanta ge of a readily available medical school library. O ther p hy siotherapists who live in a city which has a medical school ma y make use of the library. The y m ay also be allowed to b eco m e a su bscri ber. If y o u live in a to w n w it h o u t a medical school, it is possible, by means o f the in te r-li b rary lo a n d e p a r t m e n t of the local m unicipal library, to b o r r o w b o o k s or ob tain p h o to s ta t copies of articles you wish to read. T here is no excuse fo r n o t reading. It is the only way o f ke ep ing up to date with y o u r p r o ­ fession. A nd the m ore you read, the more you find to read.
