R l9,55 This book gives a very clear and com prehensive view o f hydrotherapy. It will be invaluable both to students and qualified therapists interested in hydrotherapy. The third edition differs from the second in th a t some chapters have been expanded, altered an d renam ed. A chapter on the design and equipm ent o f a hydrotherapy d epartm ent has been added. The chapter on principles o f treatm ent has inclusions such as special techniques; hold-relax, repeated contractions, stabilizations and breathing exercises ad ap ted for the pool. This chapter also includes a large section o f Bad Ragaz techniques with clear descriptions and illustrations o f the different p attern s o f m ovem ent used. The book covers the physical principles o f hydrotherapy and their application; the design an d equipm ent o f a h ydrotherapy d epartm ent (very useful to anyone involved in the setting up o f a hydrotherapy unit in a new hospital); the effects o f exercise in warm water. There are also chapters on advantages/disadvantages, indications/contraindications, dangers and precautions. M ost useful are the three chapters on the specific tr e a tm e n ts f o r r h e u m a to lo g ic a l, n e u ro lo g ic a l- a n d orthopaedic conditions. These chapters give a brief outline o f the pathology, the aim s o f treatm ent, appropriate techniques to be used and a comprehensive list o f exercises both for early and later in certain conditions. The boo k concludes with a ch ap te r on the Halliwick m ethod o f activity in w ater, especially valuable to those treating disabled persons. This again has clear descriptions, good illustrations o f positions used and som e examples of suitable activities and exercises in different conditions eg. cerebral palsy, spina bifida and atrophies. M. Wiid Principles of Joint Protection in Chronic Rheumatoid Disease M erete B rattstrom M .D . A S tu d en tlitterato r Publication D istributed by Wolfe M edical P ublications L td. 10 E arlham Street, L ondon W C2H 9 LP. This b ook is designed as an aid fo r people w orking with patients who have chronic R heum atoid A rthritis. It gives a simple clear description o f the disease process then follows w ith a brief evaluation o f the arth ritic p atient and an analysis o f functional handicaps. Next is a description o f various jo in ts and the deform ities th a t can occur accom panied by simple illustrations and a section on jo in t protection. The main section o f the boo k has photo g rap h s o f m any aids show ing incorrect and correct ways o f using them . It is suggested th a t the p h o to g rap h s be studied by patient and therapist together. Finally there is the p atien t’s han d b o o k , 9 leaflets supplied to the patient after oral review an d practical dem onstrations with the physical therapist a n d /o r the occupational therapist. These leaflets cover (1) anatom y o f the hand (2) contracture prophylaxis for the hands (3) com m on dislocations in the hands w ith risk areas m entioned (4) deficiency in ability to clench the hand with reasons for early and late causes (5) jo in t protection o f the hand (6) deform ities in the weight bearing joints (7) jo in t protection for this area including some exercises (8) advice to patients in w heelchairs (9) advice on organization o f working areas in the home. F rom a physiotherapy view point there are insufficient exercises in the patient leaflets to be effective in m aintaining range o f m ovem ent and muscle strength, as only a few exercises are done for a limited num ber o f joints. All the peripheral jo ints should be covered. Some o f the aids illustrated are im practical in so far as they are n o t easily o btainable in this country and then are o u t of the price range o f many patients. The occupational therapists feel this a valuable book with sound principles but th at some o f the equipm ent is rather o u td ated and there are now m ore m echanised, modern versions. M.
