T he International College of Radiology (ICR) is the
international body representing the national societies of

Europe, North ahd South America, Middle East and Africa,
"

Asia and Australasia. lts major function in recent years is

education, particularly at the registrar level. The emphasis

is on developing countries where interest in radiology is

growing rapidly. Regions where there has been rapid growth

in radiology include China, India, South America andAfrica.

The Radiological Society of South Africa is currently

bidding to hold this prestigious international meeting in

the year 2002, probably in Cape Town. It will be a great

honour for the society to host this meeting at a time when

there is rapid change in health care and improved economic

growth in many sub-Saharan countries. The meeting will

also cement relationships with radiologists in other coun-

tries of Africa especially the Francophone and Arab coun-

tries.

Many of the health care problems facing South Africa

are similar to those of other developing 'countries and by

interacting with radiologists at a national level or through

organizations such as the WHO and the ICR we can learn

from other countries' successes and mistakes.
