His initial research interests (in the 1990s) were the areas of semantics and lexicology, with a special focus on metaphor and figurative language. His more recent research interests, however, were sparked by his extensive experi- ence as an EFL teacher and teacher trainer, and since the 2000s he has published mostly on issues of instructed second language acquisition.
